|Terre Haute Rex Press Release: Alton Announces Team Name "River Dragons"
ALTON, Ill. - Today, Alton’s new Prospect League team announced their name . The team name will be the Alton River Dragons. The team held a name the team contest via their social media platforms, asking area residents to help name the team. The words Piasa Bird, Dragon, and River, were three words that were mentioned the most out of the nearly 1000 suggestions. Piasa Bird is a Native American Dragon depicted in one of two murals painted by Native Americans on the bluffs above the Mississippi River. Its original location was at the end of the chain of limestone bluffs in Madison Country, Illinois, at present-day Alton, Illinois. “With the words dragon, river, and Alton all being mentioned in the description of Piasa Bird the River Dragons made since as the team name.“ said team owner Steve Marso. Marso also went on to say, “We loved getting all the suggestions from area baseball fans, and we are excited about the result it produced in helping us name the team.”
The Alton River Dragons will call Lloyd Hopkins field at Gordon Moore Park in Alton home. Michael Haynes, Director of Alton Park and Rec, said “We’re excited to be the future home of the River Dragons. The announcement of the team name brings us that much closer to the inaugural season. Hopkins Field will be the perfect den for the River Dragons with various updates slated for this offseason, including a new video board, locker room, and improved playing surface.” The City of Alton and the team will be working together between now and May of next year to update and improve the stadium.
The River Dragons will play in The Prospect League, featuring now 13 teams in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and West Virginia. League Commissioner Dennis Bastien, who was in Alton for the team’s announcement, said, "The Prospect League is proud to share in the introduction and unveiling of the team name and logo of our 13th team, our newest member for 2021, the Alton River Dragons! In this certainly unprecedented time in the world, hopefully, this can bring a bit of positive news to the baseball community here in Alton, Madison County, and the entire Metro East region. We look forward to having all baseball fans, supporters and the area join in being a part of exciting River Dragons Baseball next season and beyond,"
The River Dragons also introduced Dallas Martz as General Manager of the team on Friday, who will be relocating to Alton in the coming weeks from Des Moines, Iowa. “I’m extremely excited about this opportunity and also getting to know the area and being involved in the community. Everyone I have met so far has been extremely friendly and welcoming, and I look forward to continue to get to know the area and calling Alton home.”
The Alton River Dragons will begin play in May of 2021.
